If you are like most amateur golfers, you have trouble hitting long irons. You don't generate enough clubhead speed to consistently get the ball up in the air and on target. You probably compensate for this by trying to swing harder or by trying to swing easier. Unfortunately, nothing seems to work. That's where clone fairway woods come in. You actually can swing easier and still get great results. New golf technology makes hitting fairway woods easier than ever and buying discount clone fairway woods makes it more affordable than ever.
If you think fairway woods are hard to hit based the one or two times you tried to hit a 3 wood off the turf in the middle of the fairway and duffed it, well then that's probably not a fair assessment. You need to practice the shot, for sure, but you will find it much easier to get the hang of it with a 5 wood, a 7 wood or a 9 wood. If you give one of these a try, I think you might find that it becomes one of your favorite clubs (my Ozzy MOTO clone 7 Wood is my new favorite - it goes as far as a 4 iron for me, but much easier to hit). In addition, the newer golf technology makes hitting fairway woods off the turf much easier.
Nevertheless, some golfers do find hitting fairway woods off the ground very difficult. If this is you, there is no need to fight it. You will probably do best using the newer clone hybrid golf clubs. While the hybrid clubs don't hit the ball as far as fairway woods, they are easier for some people to hit.
Who cares? I play in a foursome where I am the least macho of the group, yet I routinely beat them all by 5-10 strokes. They all are much stronger than I am, based on their biceps size. Many of them can hit the golf ball farther than I. One guy can hit a 3 iron 230+ yards -- but not very often or very accurately. The reason why I can beat them consistently is that I play smart. I don't try to be macho and hit the 4 iron over the water to the green. I will pull out my Ozzy MOTO clone 7 Wood and usually get it there most of the time. Lofted fairway woods are much more forgiving on mis-hits and won't lose as much distance as irons. My buddies will try to hit the perfect 5 iron in that same situation and usually end up in the water. Macho doesn't work for me. Scoring does.
My rule of thumb for fairway wood to iron replacement is this:
I guess they even have 11-woods, but I've never tried one. If you can't hit the 8 or 9 iron they are designed to replace, you just need to practice more! So if you have the most trouble hitting a 2 or 3 iron, the 5 wood will be a great addition. Even many pros are cashing in the 2 iron for a 5 wood. They get the same or greater distance as the 2 iron, but they get a lot more height and a softer landing. Plus, the new golf club technology has made many of the lofted fairway woods nearly as accurate as the long irons (and usually more accurate for us amateurs). Clone fairway woods give you the opportunity to try out the new golf technology at an affordable price.
One of the easiest ways to improve your golf game is to upgrade your equipment. Replace your old fairway woods with new golf technology by buying some of the new clone fairway woods. You won't have to worry about hitting those long irons anymore. And most important, you'll have a lot more fun playing golf!
